If you want to inject a modern look into your artwork, track lighting installation is definitely a good option. Track lighting can be used in a wide range of applications and you have the flexibility to adjust its position and movement to suit the desired effect.
Although track lights can be used to create ambience, they are more commonly used for task lighting or accent lighting to highlight artwork and unique architectural styles in interior design. Track lighting works by supplying power to the entire track, thereby illuminating all connected track heads. As a result, track light heads can be easily moved along the track.
Modern track lighting systems are stylishly designed and offer more choices in styles, sizes and finishes to blend into a variety of decorative styles. They can be ceiling mounted or wall mounted. However, when it comes to artistic lighting, they are most often installed on suspended ceilings.
If you are planning to install track lighting in your home or commercial space to decorate with artwork, here are some factors to consider.
Positioning Track Lighting Systems
The mounting location of track light mounting plates depends greatly on the ceiling height. For standard ceiling heights, 20 to 40 inches from the wall is recommended. The advantage of track lighting for art illumination is that it is designed to allow movement in any direction, so the track head can be strategically aimed and adjusted vertically without causing glare on the artwork. The recommended lighting angle for artwork is 30 degrees.
If your ceilings are too high and the artwork is at eye level, you may also choose to hang the track from the ceiling using a track suspension kit to maintain the proper height.
Track Selection
After determining where the track lighting will be installed, the next step is to measure the length of the track needed. The length of the artwork as well as the number of track light heads that need to be installed will affect this. Single-point fixtures are ideal if you only need to illuminate a specific point without moving the light around the track.
You will also need to choose the standard of track to be used. Most manufacturers produce three basic standard track lighting systems; Halo, Juno and Lightolier, often abbreviated to H, J and L. These are the names of the early manufacturers of track lighting systems.
Any of the standard systems can be used, but they are not interchangeable due to incompatibility. This means that when you purchase a Halo track light, all connectors, fittings and track heads must be specifically designed to be compatible.

- Lumens
For artwork lighting, the illumination level should be approximately three times the recommended light level in the room. Lumen value is an important consideration when selecting track fixtures. In a nighttime lighting program, attention should be paid to the level of artificial lighting. For example, for lighting artwork in a commercial space, consider using a 2,700 lumen LED track light. It is recommended that track lights be equipped with dimmers to adjust brightness.
- Type of light source
Modern integrated track lighting commonly uses either LED or halogen light sources. LED track lighting is preferred for its high efficiency and offers a wide range of color temperature options.
- Color Temperature and Color Rendering Index
There are various options when choosing the color temperature and color rendering index (CRI) of a track light. CRI measures how accurately an object renders its actual color in light, so a CRI value of 85 or higher is more suitable for art lighting.

Installation Steps for Track Lights
Track lights have an easy installation process. First, determine where the track light will be installed and cut the track to the proper length as needed. If necessary, use connectors to attach the track.
Turn off the switch and the lighting system’s main fuse box or circuit breaker before plugging the track lights into the existing junction box. Perform a current test to ensure no current is flowing through the wires. Next, remove all existing fixtures from the junction box.
Then, locate the end power adapter for the track light you purchased. Connect the wires in the adapter to the corresponding wires of the same color in the junction box and secure them with wire nuts or wire connectors. Place the wires back into the junction box and secure the metal tabs to the ceiling using screws, making sure the float box is located on the outside of the junction box.
After completing these steps, measure and mark the location of the holes in the track and drill holes in the ceiling. Secure the expansion bolts in the holes and tighten the nuts. Secure the track to the ceiling through the holes and tighten the expansion nuts with a screwdriver. Repeat this for all expansion bolts and place the floating nut into the track to hide it. Snap the track head into the fixture, turn the power back on and the lights will come on.
Installing Track Lights Without Existing Fixtures
There are two ways to install track lights without existing fixtures. One is to lay new cables in the ceiling and walls, and the other is to purchase a pluggable track light and connect it to a nearby outlet, which is easier and less disruptive.
